宇和島の元市立図書館（現ホリバタ）の視聴覚教室前の壁に一枚の額が飾ってある。講義を終えて帰り際にふと見つけた一枚の写真なのだが、どうも水彩画とも違う様子。
There is a frame on the wall in front of the audiovisual classroom of Uwajima's Motoshiritsu Library (now Horibata). One time, when I finished the lecture there and looked at it on my way home, it didn't appear to be a watercolor painting. So when I looked closely at it, it says:
"The Allied Fleet in the strait of Shimonoseki circa 1866"
（おおよそ1866年頃、下関海峡に連合艦隊を望む）
押印をよく見ると、"BRITISH EMBASSY, TOKYO. 28 JUN 1985" とあり、英国大使館からの贈り物らしく、当時に実際に撮影された写真の複製だと思われる。
The seal in the picture frame can read "BRITISH EMBASSY, TOKYO. 28 JUN 1985" and It seems to be a reproduced photo from the British Embassy, actually taken at that era.
どうしてこれがここに飾ってあるのか、特に何も説明されていないのだが、幕末に英国公使ハリー・パークス氏が宇和島藩と交流したことに関係していると思われる。贈呈を受けたのが1985年ということなので、おそらくはパークス来航120年記念で英国大使館から宇和島市に贈られた記念品か。
There is nothing in particular explaining why this is displayed here, but it seems to be related to the fact that British minister Harry Parks interacted with the Uwajima Domain at the end of the Edo period. Since it was presented in 1985, it is probably a souvenir given to Uwajima City by the British Embassy to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Parks' arrival.
幕末の頃から宇和島に外国との交流があった足跡をみつけるのは感慨深い。
I am deeply moved to find footprints of foreign exchanges in Uwajima since the end of the Edo period.
